Hepatitis which is the inflammation of the liver can be caused by infectious and non-infectious causes.
It can be prevented by;
- Avoid sharing sharp objects with people
- The hepatitis B vaccine is the mainstay of hepatitis B prevention. It should be given to these group of people
They include:
- People who frequently require blood or blood products, dialysis patients, recipients of solid organ transplantation;
- People interned in prisons;
- Persons who inject drugs;
- Household and sexual contacts of people with chronic HBV infection;
- People with multiple sexual partners;
- Health-care workers and others who may be exposed to blood and blood products through their work; and
- Travelers who have not completed their hepatitis B vaccination series, who should be offered the vaccine before leaving for endemic areas.
